The new model marks BYD’s first overseas-exclusive vehicle, designed specifically for Japan’s kei-car regulations.

According to BYD Japan, the K-Car will debut during the company’s press conference on October 29 (14:30–15:00) at Tokyo Big Sight. BYD plans to display a total of 13 vehicles at the show, including passenger cars and commercial models such as the J6 “Living Car” concept. The kei EV will highlight the brand’s Blade Battery technology, a compact design, and what BYD describes as an ideal EV for “everyday Japanese life.”

The teaser image shows a boxy silhouette with short overhangs, a floating roof, and circular LED light signatures front and rear. Reports suggest the car will feature sliding rear doors and a spacious cabin layout that maximizes interior room within kei limits (3.4 m long, 1.48 m wide, 2.0 m tall). Inside, expect a digital dashboard, floating touchscreen, and heated steering wheel, all wrapped in BYD’s typically clean, minimalist styling overseen by Wolfgang Egger.

While BYD hasn’t confirmed technical details, early leaks point to a 20 kWh Blade Battery offering an estimated range of around 180 km (WLTC). The car is expected to sit within the same price and range segment as Japan’s best-selling Nissan Sakura and Honda N-ONE e:, both of which have helped establish the country’s compact EV market.

This new kei EV represents a significant step for BYD’s local strategy in Japan, following its rollout of the Dolphin Mini (Seagull) and Atto 3. It underscores the company’s focus on developing Japan-specific products, rather than simply importing existing models from China.

Further information—including pricing, trim levels, and a release window—is expected at BYD’s press conference on October 29, ahead of the public opening of the show on October 31.
